Daytime Exercise Linked to Improved Sleep Quality
Quality sleep is vital for cognitive function, mood, immune system strength, and overall health. If you’re having a tough time getting the sleep you need, research shows that increasing your daytime physical activity could be the key to improving your duration and quality of sleep.
For a recent study published in Sleep Health, a journal of the National Sleep Foundation, researchers studied 1,168 children and 1,360 adults participating in the Child Health CheckPoint study, which involved both children and their parents. Over the course of eight days, participants wore activity trackers to measure their activity levels, including sedentary periods, light physical activity, and moderate to vigorous activity. They also measured the participants’ sleep duration and quality.
The findings revealed a clear correlation: individuals who engaged in more moderate to vigorous physical activity experienced higher sleep quality, while those with sedentary lifestyles tended to have poorer sleep outcomes. The researchers hypothesize that this improvement in sleep quality may be attributable to the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter known for its role in mood regulation and the sleep-wake cycle.
This study underscores the importance of incorporating regular physical activity into your daily routine for your overall health and to improve the quality of your sleep.
Ancient Grains May Help Type 2 Diabetes
As the name suggests, ancient grains are a category of grains that have remained largely unchanged over the centuries. Unlike processed grains, they still have their original genetic composition and nutritional profile, including high levels of fiber and phytochemicals. Now, a recent study suggests that eating ancient grains may benefit people with Type 2 diabetes.
A study published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases delved into 29 randomized controlled trials involving 1,809 participants diagnosed with diabetes, primarily Type 2. These individuals, managing their condition for an average of 14 years, relied on a combination of insulin and oral medications or solely oral medications. The trials evaluated various cardiovascular risk factors, such as blood sugar levels and body weight.
The findings were compelling, with 96.5% of the studies indicating a correlation between the consumption of ancient grains and improvements in diabetic health markers, including fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, cholesterol, and insulin levels. Notably, oats demonstrated positive effects on fasting blood glucose and cholesterol, while brown rice was associated with improvements in body mass index (BMI) and Hb1c. However, the impact of millets and chia seeds was less pronounced.
While these results underscore the potential benefits of incorporating ancient grains into the diet, the researchers stress the need for further analysis to validate these findings. Nevertheless, the study reinforces the notion that ancient grains could play a role in promoting overall health and managing Type 2 diabetes.

Check the Ingredients in Your Laundry Detergent…You Might Be Shocked
Do you ever wonder what lurks in the suds that clean your clothes? The scary reality is that most are loaded with highly poisonous chemicals like chlorine, ammonia, and other toxins…which can not only cause rashes and irritate your skin but wreak havoc on your endocrine and immune systems. Plus, many of them contain toxic chemicals like Triclosan, which could even make you gain weight.
As the washing machine churns, these chemicals sneak into the fibers of your clothes. Then, they slowly seep into the largest organ of your body: Your skin! The worst part? This may lead to 24/7 exposure to toxins.
That’s why Truly Free developed a non-toxic, super-powerful detergent…one that’s free of harsh, skin-irritating chemicals. Instead, it uses mill salts and plant-based cleansing ingredients (100% vegan), which will give you crisp and clean clothes, free from stains and chemicals. New Blood Test May Predict Stroke Risk
Strokes can be devastating -- and for many people they seemingly strike out of the blue. However, there’s good news on that front. Researchers have found that by measuring inflammatory markers in the bloodstream they may be able to predict who is at highest risk for cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), which narrows or blocks blood vessels in the brain increasing the risk of a stroke. This may allow doctors to take preventive steps before a stroke happens. (More)
Notice Oil in Your Urine? Here’s What It May Mean
If you go to the bathroom and notice oily deposits in your pee, it may be a sign that you’ve changed your diet, are dehydrated, or taking a vitamin that’s changing the composition of your pee. Yet, in some cases, it can also be a warning sign of a more serious issue, such as diabetes or nephrotic syndrome, which is a kidney issue that can be caused by a variety of underlying conditions. Here’s what you need to know. (More)
Fat Burning: The Difference Between Men and Women
We know exercise is important for maintaining a healthy weight. Yet, do males and females burn fat differently? Researchers examined this by conducting a treadmill study on rats. While males burned fat during vigorous exercise, females didn’t have the same fat-burning response. Yet, exercise improved fat stores for both males and females—making it healthier and more metabolically active. With so many exercise studies focused on men, this study enlightened researchers on the importance of studying exercise interventions for women. (More)
Is a Good Sense of Direction Genetic or Learned?
Why do some people seem to have a natural sense of direction while others feel “directionally impaired?” What scientists have found is that good navigation skills are more highly influenced by experience than genetics. Those who flex their wayfinding skills on a regular basis are better at less likely to get lost than those who don’t. Plus, nervousness and the fear of getting lost can impair your navigational skills. (More)
Three Specific Houseplants That Can Make You Happier
Studies have linked houseplants to lower blood pressure levels and less stress. Yet, does the type of plants you have in your home make a difference? Researchers presented study participants with eight different plant species that are typically found in homes. What they found is that while all healthy green plants boosted well-being, palms, pathos, and weeping figs were associated with the greatest sense of well-being. (More)
